The Cinderella Reflex Joan Brady 9781781998793 Books Reviews
THE CINDERELLA REFLEX by Joan Brady is an easy, contemporary read that will make you smile in all of the right places. Tess and Helene are poles apart in personality but find themselves equally unsatisfied in where they are in their lives. While a lot of Tess' friends have established careers and are getting married, she has just returned from travelling her twenties away, and her only real relationship ended in heartbreak. Helene has worked hard to get where she is in the radio business but ever since starting an affair with her boss, her own goals have been pushed aside to be there for him. When it becomes obvious that things are going to get shaken up at the station with the arrival of the new station owner, it is obvious to everyone that life is going to change. With plenty of crazy characters and madcap misunderstandings along the way, will Tess and Helene find a way to be the main characters in their own lives? While at times the pace of the story was a little slow for my liking, overall I enjoyed The Cinderella Reflex by Joan Brady.
*I voluntarily reviewed this book from the Publisher
I really enjoyed reading The Cinderella Reflex; it is modern, quick-witted and made me laugh out loud in parts. I found the characters very credible and could picture myself there with them as the story developed. The unexpected twists as the story unravels make for an easy and absorbing read, and I loved the conclusion.
I wouldn't usually buy this type of story but it was recommended to me, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It is paced well, and the author demonstrates a deft touch in weaving together the different threads of the story with humour, drama and a little suspense. The characters are well drawn out and kept me interested right to the end. The conclusion left me smiling, and you can't really ask for more than that from a book. I'll give it a 4 as it is well worth a read.
Warm and entertaing, an exhilarating ride!!
From start to finish with humor and laughter I so appreciated the developed characters Joan weaved throughout her story! I was transported to the the little village of Killary.
Simply, a great book. Rocks along at a fast clip, with loads of comedy. The narrative style is familiar, as if it were written by an author you've been reading for years, but doesn't fall into the usual cliches and stereotypes, which I'm very grateful for because those books drive me mental even thought I can't seem to stop buying them.
I picked up on this book because I'd never read anything set in a radio station before, and I was intrigued by a plot about women competing with each other for a job, instead of the usual drippy I-just-need-a-man stuff. Still, I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't expect it to be so funny or to have such clever plot twists.
The main characters, Tess and her boss Helene, work in a small local radio station, but end up competing for a big job once the station is bought over and major expansion plans mean a glittering career with fame and glory is suddenly in the offing. The competition seems to bring out the worst in everyone involved, and there are quite a few shocks when people find out what their competitors have been up to all along.
There are great side characters in Ollie, the comically awful presenter, Sara, who was possibly my favourite even though I should probably have hated her. She made me laugh out loud several times, as did the scene at the launch party. The tale is well-drawn, very easy to visualise. Very impressive.
I loved the ending, and I wish I could tell you why, but almost anything I say would be a spoiler, so I can't! I give this book 4 stars. It improved my mood every time I got the chance to read it. I think this author has even better ahead of her still and I'll have to reserve the highest accolade for what's hopefully yet to come.
Quick read!
Ok. Kind of meandered around. Main character was kind of a doormat for most of the book until she found her backbone.
Characters seemed "one sided" and rather boring until the end, where it got a bit better. . It just did not have the punch it could have had. Additionally there were a few grammatical errors that surprised me.
